Nickerie is a district in the extreme northwest of Suriname , it borders in the east on the district Coronie , in the south on the district Sipaliwini and in the west on Guyana , the border river is the Corantijn . The district has an area of 5,353 km² and has 34,233 inhabitants. The main town is Nieuw-Nickerie , the second largest city in the country after Paramaribo . The Nickerie district is represented by five members of parliament ( De Nationale Assemblée ).
Economy and Development
The main branch of the economy is agriculture, especially rice cultivation , with the focus in Wageningen .
A relatively large part of the south of the Sipaliwini district is claimed by Guyana , so there are few border crossings. The most important - a ferry connection over the Corantijn to Corriverton - is located a few kilometers south of the main town of Nieuw-Nickerie.
Administrative division
The Nickerie district is in turn divided into the following five departments (decentralized):
- Henar
- Nieuw-Nickerie
- Oostelijke Polders
- Wageningen
- Westelijke Polders
