The Corantijn ( English Courantyne ) is a river in South America. It forms the border between Guyana and Suriname , but according to the arbitral tribunal it belongs entirely to Surinamese territory.

River course

The Corantijn rises in the Acarai Mountains at a latitude less than 2 ° north of the equator , on the border with Guyana and Brazil, and initially includes the Oronoque and King Edward Rivers in its course . In the waterfall complex, of which the Barrington-Brown Falls are the best known, the Barrington-Brown comes from Guyana as a tributary. Further north, the Coeroeni and, after having passed the Frederik Willem IV waterfalls, the Lucie River are included. Behind the mighty Wonotobo falls , the Corantijn leaves the hills and mountains. In the area of the 5th parallel it flows eastwards for a time and turns again to the north after the Kabalebo and Matapi rivers have taken up . Shortly before it flows into the Atlantic , the Corantijn picks up the Nickerie . The mouth width at Nieuw-Nickerie is approx. 7 km. It has a total length of approx. 700 km from the source to the mouth.

particularities

The Corantijn is rich in waterfalls, such as a. the Oronoque , Barrington-Brown , Wonotobo , Tijger and the Tramway cases . Also noteworthy are the many river islands, such as u. a. the Bisschop , Baviaan , Drie Gezuster and Papegaai islands . The river is very wide, but difficult to navigate due to the shallows and the many sandbanks.

Border problems

Between the upper reaches of the Corantijn, called the New River in Guyana , the Coeroeni and Koetari is an area that was claimed by both Suriname and Guyana. With the maps available here, this controversial area of Guyana was slammed. In addition, Suriname viewed the left bank of the Corantijn as the border, while Guyana, in contrast, viewed the middle of the river as the border. This territorial dispute, which has been simmering since colonial times, was resolved in 2007 by a ruling by the Hague Arbitration Court , in which the border between Guyana and Suriname runs on the left bank of the river, making the river part of eastern Suriname in full width. This gives Suriname control of all shipping traffic from the mouth on the Corantijn.
