The Sipaliwini is a river in the southwest of Suriname , in the district of the same name Sipaliwini . It is a right tributary of the Coeroeni.

Headwaters

It rises in the Sipaliwini savannah in the border area with Brazil . The Sipaliwini savannah is part of the Sipaliwini nature reserve .

River course

Flowing west, the Sipaliwini takes on the Koeini , Apiego and Wioemikreek from the right . About 20 km west of the village of Kwamalasamutu it flows into the Coeroeni River.

particularities

The Sipaliwini is characterized by rocky subsoil and many small waterfalls. Its name comes from the Arawak language: sipa means "stone" and wini "water", "river".
