Kwamalasamutu , also Kwamalasamoetoe , is a village of the Tiriyó Indians in the south of Suriname in the Sipaliwini district . It lies on the river of the same name and is the largest settlement in the Coeroenie resort .
The name of the place means bamboo sand , after the nearby river banks overgrown with bamboo and borders on the area disputed with Guyana - see map. Kwamalasamutu is the most important Tiriyó settlement in Suriname. There are also eight other ethnic groups. The ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin worked here since 1982.
