from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sipaliwini nature reserve is located in Suriname , in the Sipaliwini district , on the border with Brazil .

The reserve was established in 1971 and covers an area of around 100,000 hectares . It was mainly constituted because of the Sipaliwinisavanna , a continuation on Surinamese territory of the vast Parusavanna. This savanna area begins on Brazilian territory and is part of the Tumucumaque National Park .

The largest part of the Sipaliwini reserve (630 km²) is formed by savannah, an undulating, hilly landscape of particular beauty. The area is 275 - 400 m above sea level , covered in many places with stones and stone blocks. The vegetation consists predominantly of false grasses , low perennials and scattered trees. There are Mauritius palms in the stream valleys .

The Morro Grosso (596 m), the Vier Gebroeders (554 m) and some unnamed mountains in the south protrude from the landscape as island mountains .

The western edge of the savannah is shaped by tropical rainforest . In the south, east and northeast, the border of the protected area is formed by the watershed between the Sipaliwini and Paru river basins , over which the border with Brazil also runs.

The area is rich in prehistoric artifacts such as stone axes , arrow and spearheads, and earthenware work . The reserve is part of the residential area of the Tiriyó - people .
