Luis Alcoriza de la Vega (born September 5, 1918 in Badajoz , Spain , † December 3, 1992 in Cuernavaca , Mexico ) was a Mexican film director and screenwriter of Spanish origin. He wrote the scripts for over 80 films and directed around 20 himself.

biography

He was born the son of theater actors in Spain. During the Spanish Civil War , the family emigrated to Mexico, where he worked in film from 1940. At first he worked primarily as an actor and embodied, for example, Jesus Christ in María Magdalena, pecadora de Magdala , Miguel Contreras Torres ' film biography of Maria Magdalena from 1946 and, also directed by Contreras Torres, in Reina de reinas: La Virgen María from 1949.

In 1946 Alcoriza also began writing screenplays. At that time he married the actress Raquel Rojas (later Janet Alcoriza), with whom he remained married until his death and with whom he wrote most of his scripts together in the following years . The best known is the collaboration with the director Luis Buñuel . Alcoriza wrote the templates for ten of his films from 1949 to 1962. For Die Vergessenen he won the Premio Ariel in 1951 . Other directors with whom he has worked as a screenwriter include Miguel M. Delgado , Rafael Baledón and Julián Soler .

In 1961, Los Jóvenes was his first work as a director. Numerous other films followed and from then on he also concentrated his work as a screenwriter primarily on his own directorial work. The miracle of Tlayucan over a poor and divided village in Mexico was nominated for " best foreign language film " at the 1963 Academy Awards. Tarahumara was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1966. Alcorizas films were shown, for example, in competition at the International Film Festival of Cannes , the Berlin International Film Festival , the Moscow International Film Festival and the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián .

In the 1970s he made films such as Mecánica nacional (1972), together with Gabriel García Márquez Presagio (1974), and the political satire Las fuerzas vivas (1975). Francisco Franco's death prompted him to shoot the films Tac-tac (1982) and, based on a novel by Miguel Delibes , La Sombra del ciprés es alargada (1990) in Spain . In 1988 he won the Goya for Lo que importa es vivir .

In 1990 he was awarded an honorary prize at the Premio Ariel. After his death in 1992, he was honored with the Salvador Toscano Medal, also at the Premio Ariel Awards.
