La Virgen morena (German: The Land of Mariachi ) is a Mexican film from 1942. It was directed by Gabriel Soria , who also wrote the screenplay for this period film .

action

The plot of the film unfolds around the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe . In 1531, a few years after the Spanish conquered Mexico, Temoch was the last of the Aztec nobles to rule over his people from a hidden fortification. Spanish clergy and the viceroy's daughter, Blanca, try to convert the indigenous people to Christianity. However, their efforts are hampered by the violent demeanor of Captain Delgadillo, who has his troops burn down and kill the Aztec houses. Blanca, along with a monk and a bishop, lodged a complaint with her father against these atrocities. Still, she is kidnapped by Temoch, who hopes to force her father to prevent the violence by Delgadillo's forces. Blanca is treated well by the Aztecs and sympathizes with their concerns. One of the indigenous peoples, Juan Diego, has an apparition of Mary on Mount Tepeyac . The Virgin invites him to tell the Bishop of this encounter. However, he does not want to believe this without proof. Meanwhile, Delgadillo and his troops storm the hidden fortress and kill most of the Aztecs, but Temoch and Blanca are able to escape into the city. Delgadillo is arrested after this act on the orders of the viceroy. Suddenly Juan Diego reappears, wearing roses blessed by the Virgin Mary in his cloak. In addition, her image is miraculously imprinted on the coat itself. The film ends with everyone, including Temoch, falling to their knees in worship of the Virgin.
