Tepeyac is one of the largest pilgrimage sites in the world. Around 20 million pilgrims visit the city every year . On December 9, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Aztec Juan Diego on Mount Tepeyac . According to him, she asked him to build a chapel on the mountain. The Bishop Juan de Zumarraga did not believe him and demanded proof of the apparition . Three days later, Juan Diego had another apparition. It expressed itself as the image of Our Lady on his cloak. With that he went to the bishop who commissioned the building of the chapel in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe . In 1705 a large basilica was completed, today the miraculous image is shown in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe .
