Miguel Delibes Setién (born October 17, 1920 in Valladolid , Spain , † March 12, 2010 ibid) was a Spanish writer . Some of his novels are read in schools in Spanish-speaking countries.

Life

Miguel Delibes grew up as the third child of Adolfo Delibes and María Setién with seven other siblings. His father was a lecturer in commercial law at the Escuela de Comercio (commercial school) in Valladolid, his paternal grandfather, Frédéric Delibes Roux, was the nephew of the French composer Léo Delibes . He had come to Spain as a technician when the Reinosa - Santander railway line was being built, fell in love with a Spanish woman and never returned to France.

Miguel Delibes attended Christian schools in Valladolid, first with the Carmelites , later at the Colegio de Lourdes, took drawing lessons at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios and entered the Escuela de Comercio when the civil war broke out . In 1938 he volunteered for the Navy.

He later studied economics, in which he reached the title of "Intendente Mercantil". He graduated with a master's degree in law and began doctoral studies, but never submitted a dissertation. In 1943 he completed a crash course in journalism in Madrid .

From 1941 onwards he used his talent for drawing and began working as a cartoonist for El Norte de Castilla ; In addition, in 1942 he worked for six months as a bank clerk at Banco Castellano. From 1945 he taught commercial law at the Escuela de Comercio in Valladolid and began to work as a writer. According to his own statements, he had felt inspired and called to literature by reading one of the specialist books from which he was preparing for the appointment.

On April 23, 1946, he married Ángeles de Castro, with whom he had seven children (the firstborn Miguel was born in 1947). She died on November 22, 1974, which was a great loss for him. In 1991 he was to dedicate Señora de rojo sobre fondo gris to the memory of his wife.

In 1947 he submitted his first novel, La sombra del ciprés es alargada , for the prestigious Premio Nadal literary prize , which he was awarded on January 6, 1948. The second novel, Aún es de día , ran into difficulties with the censors in 1949, which put the red pen to the test. In the same year he wrote a brief history of Spain (Síntesis de Historia de España) for his students , but this also aroused the displeasure of the authorities and was only allowed to be used for one course.

In 1955, his novel Diario de un cazador received the Premio Nacional de Literatura (State Prize for Literature). For Siestas con viento sur , a collection of stories, he received the Premio Fastenrath in 1957.

From 1958 to 1963 he was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper El Norte de Castilla , where he was able to bring critical issues up during the Franco dictatorship until he was removed from office.

In between he traveled a lot, he got to know the northeast of Africa , Eastern Europe , South America and the United States , where, among other things, he was visiting professor at the University of Maryland in 1964 . On his travels he gave lectures in many important universities. Delibes was also an avowed fan of hunting and has written several books about it.

In 1962 Ana Mariscal filmed his novel El camino ; this became the starting point for a number of novel adaptations (see below). From 1964 his collected works were published by the publisher Josep Vergés.

In 1973 he was elected a member of the Real Academia de la Lengua Española (RAE), where he gave his inaugural speech in 1975.

In 1982 he was awarded the Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras (Prize of the Prince of Asturias ) together with Gonzalo Torrente Ballester , in 1984 he was awarded the Premio de las Letras of the Junta de Castilla y León, a year later he was awarded the Premio de las Letras by the French government Appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . In 1992 he received the State Prize for Spanish Literature (Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas), and one year later the Golden Ear at the Valladolid Film Festival . In 1993 the university in his hometown was also named after him. The following year the Spanish King Juan Carlos awarded him the Cervantes Prize . In 1997 the journalism prize named after him, “Premio de Periodismo Miguel Delibes”, was launched by the Asociación de la Prensa de Valladolid.

In 1998 he was diagnosed with cancer. An operation in 1999 was able to restore his health, but from then on he increasingly withdrew from the public.

Miguel Delibes has edited three of his novels as plays: Cinco horas con Mario , La hoja roja and Las guerras de nuestros antepasados . Many of his novels were made into films.

He has written more than 60 books; many have been translated into different languages. He wrote his first works ( La sombra del ciprés es alargada , Aún es de día and El camino ) intuitively and was only influenced by the commercial code.

His most important works are El camino (1950), La sombra del ciprés es alargada (1947), Las ratas (1962), El príncipe destronado (1973), He dicho (1997) and El hereje (1998).
