El Norte de Castilla is a regional Spanish daily newspaper based in Valladolid , the capital of the province of Valladolid and the autonomous region of Castile and León . It is published by El Norte de Castilla, SA, part of the media company Grupo Vocento . El Norte de Castilla is the main daily newspaper in Castile and León.

history

El Norte de Castilla is the oldest daily newspaper in Spain. The newspaper was launched in 1854 by the pharmacist Mariano Pérez Mínguez and the doctor Pascual Pastor, at that time still under the name El Avisador . In 1856 it was renamed El Norte de Castilla when it merged with El Correo de Castilla .

Personalities

From 1958 to 1963 the Spanish writer Miguel Delibes was editor-in-chief of the newspaper, where he managed to bring up critical issues during the Franco dictatorship until he was removed from office. Delibes had already worked as a cartoonist for El Norte de Castilla in the early 1940s . Before 1960, Francisco Umbral was employed as a columnist there. The poet and essayist José Jiménez Lozano is also closely associated with the sheet . He has been working for the newspaper since 1958, worked as an editor from 1962 to 1978, then became deputy editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief in 1980 before retiring in 1995.
