Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (born June 13, 1910 in Ferrol , † January 27, 1999 in Salamanca ) was a Spanish writer.

Life

Gonzalo Torrente Ballester was born on June 13, 1910 in Ferrol , near A Coruña , Spain. In 1926 he began his university studies in Santiago de Compostela , which he continued in Oviedo in 1927 . During these years he began his journalistic work. In 1929 he moved to Madrid to study philosophy and humanities . In 1932 he married Josefina Malvido, graduated in 1935 and devoted himself to his work as a writer and reviewer.

From 1972 he was a member of the Real Academia Española . He was awarded the Premio Principe de Asturias (1982) and the Premio Miguel de Cervantes (1985) , among others . He died on January 27, 1999 in his apartment in Salamanca.

Works

Torrente Ballester's work includes reviews, articles, plays and novels. He is particularly known for his adaptation of the Don Juan myth, which appeared in 1963 and is one of the few works translated into German. Other major works are
