Commewijne is a district in Suriname . The district is bordered by Suriname to the west, by the Marowijne district to the east and by the Para district to the south .
The main branch of the economy is agriculture, which has been practiced in the area since the beginning of Dutch colonization in the 17th century (in the form of plantation farming).
Some remains of smaller forts in Commewijne still come from the colonial era . The most important of these is located in the main town of the Nieuw-Amsterdam district and has been turned into an open-air museum.
The Commewijne district is represented by four members of parliament ( De Nationale Assemblée ).

The Commewijne district is in turn divided into the following six departments (decentralized):
