The Commewijne ( Sranantongo : Kawina-liba ; liba = "river, stream") is a river in the north of Suriname , in the Commewijne district . It rises in the hills of the Commewijne district with the Ober-Commewijne, Tempati and Mapanekreek as the most important source rivers . Flowing northwards, the Commewijne in the younger coastal plain takes on the Cassewinica as a left tributary and gradually turns to the west north of the former Potribo plantation .

The only bridge built in 1980 over the Commewijne is in Stolkertsijver near Potribo. It is part of the east-west connection established around 1960 in Suriname. A ferry connection existed here until the bridge was completed.

After the Commewijne has also taken up the Commetewanekreek , it merges with the Cottica and connects to the Atlantic Ocean via the Warappa, Matapica and Tapoeripakanal through the Plantage Alliance . After the confluence of the Orleanakreek , it flows further west and finally reaches the Atlantic via the mouth of the Suriname .

The Commewijne has a catchment area of approx. 6,600 km².

Surname

The river was also known as Camaiwini and Cammawini in the 16th and 17th centuries . The names probably have their origin in the Arawak words: kama = " tapir " and wini = "water, river".
