Zanderij is a village in Suriname . It is located in the Zuid-Para resort in the Para district, directly west of the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport and around 45 kilometers south of the capital Paramaribo .
The town has around 200 residents, most of whom are employed by the airport. Before the airport was built, it was almost exclusively Caribs . It is located in the "Zanderij savanne " and owes its name to the sand that is extracted here for the manufacture of glass.
On June 7, 1989, a Douglas DC-8 of Surinam Airways had an accident on Surinam Airways flight 764 near Zanderij. In the most momentous air accident in Surinamese history, 176 people died, including the football player Lloyd Doesburg .
