Lloyd Doesburg (born April 29, 1960 , † June 7, 1989 with Zanderij ) was a Surinamese - Dutch football goalkeeper . He played as a professional at SBV Vitesse in Arnhem , SBV Excelsior in Rotterdam and AFC Ajax in Amsterdam . Doesburg died in the crash of Surinam Airways flight 764 with other players from the Kleurrijk Elftal , a selection of football players with Surinamese roots who wanted to take part in a tournament in Paramaribo .

biography

Doesburg played for USV Elinkwijk until 1981 , after which he was with Vitesse Arnheim in the Eerste Divisie for five years . Here he got his nickname de Kat ("the cat") due to his reflexes and quickly became a crowd favorite, not only because he saved three penalties in one of his first games before the season against NEC in the final of the Gelderland Cup. Since Vitesse didn't have a full professional player at that time, he had to work as an iron weaver on the construction site during the day. On some days he came to training in full construction workers' gear. After disputes with coach Hans Dorjee , he moved to Excelsior Rotterdam for the 1986/87 season as a replacement for the injured Carlo l'Ami , for which he was used 24 times in the Eredivisie . Since the club wanted to cut his salary significantly for the next season, he did not extend it at Excelsior, but stayed unemployed for a few months as a houseman at home. It was only just before the 1987/88 season that he received a call from Ajax coach Johan Cruijff , who brought him to Ajax Amsterdam as the second goalkeeper behind Stanley Menzo to replace Fred Grim .

Cruijff introduced the “playing” goalkeeper who could act as the “last man” in the event of attacks. This way of playing suited Doesburg; even at USV Elinkwijk he was often used as a field player and in 1981, in one of his last games for the club from the north of Utrecht, had to replace the center forward. After a 2-1 deficit with two header hits, he made it 3-2 for his team. Doesburg benefited from goalkeeping training under Frans Hoek in Amsterdam and was seeded for the second team. For the Amsterdam first team, however, he only made five games, one of which was in the 1987/88 Eredivisie season. The last time he stood on March 27, 1989 against HFC Haarlem between the posts of the Ajacieden , where he did not allow a goal.

On June 7, 1989 Doesburg took part as the only player of one of the European top clubs in the flight of the Kleurrijk Elftal to Suriname, which was to compete in Paramaribo for a friendship tournament. Neither Ruud Gullit nor Frank Rijkaard or Aron Winter , who were also invited, got their clubs approved. Henny Meijer and Doesburg's club mate Stanley Menzo had previously traveled to Suriname. The Douglas DC-8 of the SLM 18 football players among the 187 people on board crashed on landing at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport from. Doesburg was one of the 176 fatalities in the aircraft accident.

Lloyd Doesburg was buried in Utrecht on June 22, 1989 with the participation of the entire Ajax professional team . Six of the teammates carried Doesburg's coffin. “We stayed until the coffin disappeared into the ground. I had never seen it before and it was very moving, ” Jan Wouters recalled a few years later.

In memory of the goalkeeper, the municipality of Lelystad , where Doesburg lived, holds a competition for the Lloyd Doesburg bokaal for the best penalty taker every New Year's Day . Doesburg had been in the goal of VV Unicum in the first New Year's football competition, which has been held annually since 1989 between an all-star team from VV Unicum and a team from the community.
