Eleuterio Fernández Huidobro (called "el Ñato", born March 14, 1942 in Montevideo ; † August 5, 2016 there ) was a Uruguayan politician and writer.

Life

Fernández Huidobro completed his school education at the Colegio y Liceo Santa María and at IAVA . From 1959 to December 1966 he then worked for Banco Popular . He was one of the founding members of the national liberation movement MLN-Tupamaros . On October 8, 1969, he was arrested in Pando and subsequently imprisoned. In September 1971, he and 110 prisoners managed to escape from the prison in Punta Carretas . He was arrested again on April 14, 1972 and seriously injured. In September 1973, he and eight other prisoners, including Mauricio Rosencof , José Mujica and Raúl Sendic , were declared hostage of the civil-military dictatorship, were removed from Libertad prison and were in complete isolation. These detention conditions were relaxed in May 1984 under national and international pressure and they were returned to Libertad Prison. He was finally released on March 14, 1985 by the Ley de Pacificación Nacional .

Fernández Huidobro, who belongs to the party alliance Frente Amplio , held a mandate as deputy senator in the Cámara de Senadores for a total of four days in the 44th legislative period . In the 45th (for the Partido Encuentro Progresista / Frente Amplio) and 46th legislative term (for Encuentro Progresista / Frente Amplio / Nueva Mayoría) he then took a titular mandate as senator from February 15, 2000.

At times he was Vice President of Uruguay between 2005 and 2009. In 2007 he founded the internal party sector Corriente de Acción y Pensamiento - Libertad (CAP-L). In May 2011, he resigned as a senator. Since July 13, 2011, according to other sources since July 26, 2011, Fernández Huidobro was Uruguay's Minister of Defense in the government of President José Mujica.

Beyond politics, Fernández Huidobro worked as a writer. As such, he wrote various books. This includes, among other things, with the Premio Bartolomé Hidalgo excellent Memorias del Calabozo . He also wrote La Fuga de Punta Carretas , for which he was awarded the City of Montevideo Prize.

On July 31, 2016 it was reported that Fernández Huidobro had been in the military hospital with a triple broken hip since July 28, 2016 and had been put into an artificial coma due to his respiratory disease, COPD . He died there on August 5, 2016 at the age of 74.
