The Instituto Alfredo Vázquez Acevedo is a building in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo .

The building, inaugurated in 1911, is located in the Barrio Cordón on Calle Eduardo Acevedo 1419-1427 and the streets José E. Rodó , Guayabo and Emilio Frugoni . Alfredo Jones Brown was responsible as the architect . The building houses Liceo Nº 35 "Instituto Alfredo Vázquez Acevedo" (IAVA), the oldest secondary school (Liceo) in the Montevideo department . In addition, the Observatorio Astronómico , the Museo de Historia Natural "Dr. Carlos A. Torres de la Llosa" , which opened on January 22, 1911, and the Biblioteca de Enseñanza Secundaria are housed here. From 2006 to March 2009, restoration and renovation work was carried out on the building for around 2.5 million US dollars under the direction of architect Jorge Di Pólito .

Since 1976 the building has been classified as the Monumento Histórico Nacional .
