The Daily Star is an English-language newspaper for the Near East , in Beirut , Lebanon , is published. It was founded in 1952 by Kamel Mrowa , the publisher of the Arab daily Al-Hayat .

history

The English-language newspaper, founded in 1952 , was intended to serve as a source of information for the growing number of foreigners brought to the region by the oil industry. It was first circulated in Lebanon and then its range was expanded to the entire region. It not only conveyed news from the foreigners' home countries, but also provided information about news from the region. In the 1960s it was the leading English language newspaper in the Middle East. After Mrowa's death in 1966, the newspaper was taken over by his widow Salma Elbissar , who ran it until the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war , which forced the publication to cease. When the hopes for peace were high in early 1983, production of the newspaper began again under the direction of Mrowa's sons, but the renewed intensification of the war put the newspaper under pressure again. The flight of intellectuals from the country reduced both the staffing of the paper and its readership. Even so, the paper remained a daily newspaper until 1985 and was published as a weekly paper for another year before it was discontinued again. After achieving peace in 1991 and developing a reconstruction program three years later, the newspaper looked forward to publication again. Under the direction of Mrowa's firstborn son Jamil Mroue , the newspaper started printing again in 1996 with modern presses, experienced foreign journalists and an ambitious Lebanese team.

In 2004, the Daily Star merged its Lebanese and regional editions and focused on Lebanese foreigners in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) area.

Due to economic difficulties, the Dailystar temporarily suspended its publication in January 2009, but resumed it in February 2009. The Daily Star had to temporarily cease printing in February 2020 as the Lebanese press faced major financial challenges, compounded by the worsening economic situation in the country.

distribution

The Daily Star signed an agreement with the International Herald Tribune (IHT) newspaper in 2000 for joint marketing presentation, printing and distribution. According to the agreement, the Daily Star represents the IHT in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Lebanon, Syria , Jordan , Egypt , Yemen and Iraq , but the cooperation ended in 2006 ( Lebanon War 2006 ).

From 2006 the Daily Star temporarily produced a local edition "The Daily Star - Kuwait edition" in cooperation with Al-Watan , an Arabic-language daily newspaper from Kuwait .

The Daily Star has been operating an internet platform since 1997 that has long been considered one of the best in the Middle East. However, Lebanese bloggers started a campaign in 2010 to revise the website's outdated design, and in 2011 the website was actually redesigned. The Daily Star has a wide online readership, mainly in North America , Europe and Australia .
