The Astral Sleep is the second studio album of the Metal - band Tiamat . It was published by Century Media in September 1991 .

Origin and style

After the still heavily death-doom- heavy debut Sumerian Cry , occasionally classified as Black Metal , Johan “Lucifer Hellslaughter” Edlund announced that the following LP would be a concept album . Keyboards first appeared on The Astral Sleep , a cleaner guitar sound was used. Comparisons were made with the style of Paradise Lost , soon to be called Gothic Metal , and influences from Venom and King Diamond were identified. The album was recorded with Waldemar Sorychta in Dortmund , the seat of the new Century Media label, on which this album first appeared. Sorychta also played a guitar on Ancient Entity .

In 2006 the album was re-released with two bonus tracks from the 1990 single A Winter Shadow .

reception

Frank Albrecht described the album in Rock Hard magazine as a “real surprise”. The band could “reach an incredible number of different fan classes with their novel sounds. The peculiarities of this record start, for example, with the peculiar Gothic guitar sound of Tiamat, which hardly any band has used up to now. Then there is the aggressive but melancholy singing of band leader Johan and the strange rhythm of the songs ... “He awarded nine out of ten points.
