Victory Songs is the third full music album by the Finnish folk / viking metal band Ensiferum . It was released on March 23, 2007 in Finland by Spinefarm Records , and on March 28, 2007 by Drakkar Entertainment in Germany . It was recorded from November to December 2006 at Sonic Pump Studios in Finland . It is the first full album on which the then new band members Petri Lindroos , Sami Hinkka and Janne Parviainen could be heard, and the last one on which Meiju Enho played.

There are / were several editions of Victory Songs, some of which are / were only available in certain countries.

In this version the CD was written on both sides, on one the normal audio CD, on the other two features:

In addition to the album, it also contained the previous EP Dragonheads on a second CD .

criticism

Victory Songs was mostly positively rated by the trade press, as it is mainly remembered by the listener due to its mostly catchy melodies. The opinions, however, varied considerably - from average to masterpiece.

So wrote vampster.com :

“Ensiferum may have recorded their catchiest, if not their best album. Fans can access it without hesitation. I would recommend everyone else to check out the debut "Ensiferum" or "Iron" first. "

The album was also well received internationally. a. also recognizable by the criticism on the website metalstorm.ee , which rated the album with 9.5 out of 10 points:

Anyone remotely interested in folk music or power metal should fall in love with this album as soon as they hear it.

Contents of the songs

  • Ad Victoriam (Eng. To Victory ) is a purely instrumental piece that begins as a simple melody and develops into a pompous march.
  • Blood is the Price of Glory (dt. Blood is the price of fame ) is about a fierce battle in which the lyric I expresses his respect for all the warriors and his aversion to all deserters.
  • Deathbringer from the Sky (dt. Todbringer from heaven ) tells of a flying, fire-breathing monster (presumably. A dragon) coming to kill humanity, so that his peers the world govern.
  • Ahti (Eng. Ahti - Finnish god of the sea) reports on various people who call Ahti and their fates.
  • One More Magic Potion (dt. Another potion ) introduces some warriors who lost after a battle in the forest and find shelter there in a wooden house. A witch lives in the house who gives the men a magic potion with a strong hallucinogenic effect, which puts the men in a strong intoxication.
  • Wanderer (dt. Wanderer ) tells of a mysterious wanderer (possibly Odin , who also has the nickname "The Wanderer") who wanders lonely and tirelessly across the country.
  • Raised by the Sword (dt. Levied by the sword ) announced at the beginning of the fate of a people to be killed by mysterious warriors and closes with the fact that this people will be helped by an army / group (Elite) warriors.
  • The New Dawn (dt. The new morning , literally the new dawn ) to gain from inspiring the army of the lyrical ego by selbiges to the upcoming battle reports.
  • Victory Song (dt. Victory song ) is about the "determination" of a large army to invade a northern country to attack the castle of the local ruler and finally the local people a new faith (presumably. Christianity) impose. The ending remains open, however it is implied that the defenders will win.

With Timo Väänänen Ensiferum succeeded in winning one of Finland's best skittle players for the album. It also represents his first musical contribution to a metal album.
