1997–1999 is a compilation album by the Finnish folk / viking metal band Ensiferum . It was released on February 9, 2005 and contains songs from the band's first three demos, Demo I , Demo II and Hero in a Dream .

The songs were not re-recorded for the album, nor were they remastered . A limited edition of 500 copies was pressed and sold exclusively on the Ensiferum website and at concerts. After just under two months, on April 4, 2005, the band announced that all copies had been sold and that the album was no longer first-hand.

History of origin

Old logo of the band, designed for the demo I.

Demo I

The songs on the first demo were written between 1995 and 1996. The songs were recorded and produced on November 1st and 2nd, 1997 in the Kivi studio . The mastering took over a certain amount of time . Tuomas "Tuoppi" Tahvanainen designed the logo and artwork at that time, and two years later he also created the current logo. The demo appeared as a cassette with a print run of around 300 copies, was self-financed and was self-distributed without a label.

Demo II

Album art of Demo II

Shortly before the recordings for Demo II , Kimmo Miettinen left Ensiferum and became the drummer of the black metal band Arthemisa . The bassist Sauli Savolainen quit at the same time in order to be able to concentrate more on school and work. Miettinen's little brother, Jukka-Pekka (bass), and the previous Arthemisa drummer Oliver Fokin joined the band as successors. The recordings for Demo II took place in January 1999 in the MD studios in the Finnish capital Helsinki . It was also distributed independently.

Hero in a Dream

The recording and mixing of the first four songs from Demo Hero in a Dream took place in only 16 hours on November 15th and 16th, 1999, also in the MD studios . The fifth song, Guardians of Fate , was recorded in Jari Müllenpää's home studio . The drum track comes from a drum computer . Was produced Hero in a Dream of Janne Joutsenniemi . Johanna Vakkuri, a friend of the band, is a guest singer at Eternal Wait .

criticism

Hardly any reviews were written about 1997–1999, which is mainly due to the limited edition of the CD. However, many of the songs were re-recorded for the first two Ensiferum studio albums Ensiferum and Iron and make up a significant part of these albums.

One of the few reviews comes from Alexander Melzer from the webzine metal-observer.com . He awarded nine out of ten points for the album and writes:

"Variety and good melodies [...] - Viking Metal at its best, with certain Power Metal influences [and] very variable vocals. [...] I can only advise all Ensiferum fans to look out for" 1997–1999 ", because even in its early phase, this band was able to put the majority of their valued colleagues in their pockets! "
