Iron ( engl. , Iron ') is the second album of the Finnish Viking metal band Ensiferum . The album was released on October 18, 2004 by the record label Spinefarm Records . After the release of this album, Jari Muchtenpää left Ensiferum to devote himself to his own band Wintersun .
production
The album was recorded in the Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen . It was produced and mixed by Flemming Rasmussen .
style
Texts
The texts mostly revolve around Norse mythology and the Vikings . All lyrics were written by Jari Müllenpää, he wrote the lyrics in Tears with the singer Kaisa Saaris. In addition, with the exception of some Finnish text passages from Lai Lai Hei, all texts are in English.
music
The most common are guttural and hymn-like chants. There are also choirs, flutes, a female voice and distinct humppaesque folk influences in the songs. Thus, the album is difficult to categorize, as it also contains songs reminiscent of Power Metal such as Sword Chant and the acoustically performed ballad Tears .
Cover
As on the debut album Ensiferum , the cover artwork by Kristian Wåhlin shows the warrior mascot Ensiferum. In Iron , the warrior stands next to his shield-hung horse on a rock spur and looks out over a brightly lit battlefield below. The Ensiferum band logo can be seen above. In contrast to Ensiferum , the foreground and middle ground shine in warmer tones, while the background is dominated by a mountain range in tones of blue.

review
Robert Müller from the German Metal Hammer rated the album with 4 out of 7 points and wrote in his review:
"[...] Ensiferum succeeds in weaving a dense atmosphere, not only nodding casually in the direction of traditional metal warriors like Manowar or Blind Guardian and essentially paying homage to the death metal of modern Finnish schools. That's enough for four points, even if the clichés are sometimes applied a bit thick. "
