Markus Toivonen (* 1979 ) is a Finnish metal - guitarist and founding and active member of the Finnish folk metal band Ensiferum .

biography

Before Ensiferum he played in the band Dark Reflections, which mainly covered groups like Megadeth and Pantera . In addition to Ensiferum, he is also involved in the humorous progressive metal band Speden Timantit.

Toivonen was the initiator of Ensiferum, after not being inspired by membership in Dark Reflections. He also showed great interest in folk music and melodic death metal bands such as Dark Tranquility and Amorphis , which he later lists as musical influences in the supplement to the Ensiferum album, alongside Iron Maiden , Manowar and Judas Priest . Then Toivonen asked the drummer of Dark Reflections, Kimmo Miettinen, if he wanted to start a band with him. Miettinen agreed, while Sauli Savolainen later joined the band and the line-up was completed with the second guitarist and singer Jari Mängenpää .

Toivonen is mainly responsible for guitars on Ensiferum's releases. However, he also appears as a singer for the clear and background vocals , especially after Mäenpää left . In addition, he occasionally plays percussion instruments , for example in the song Goblins' Dance on beer bottles on the Ensiferum album .
