Stone Cold Metal is the fourth single by the Finnish folk / Viking metal band Ensiferum . It was only released after the album From Afar (which included the song Stone Cold Metal ) on August 9, 2010 through Spinefarm Records . The single is only available as a paid download from online music services such as the iTunes Store or Musicload and was never pressed on CD.

History of origin

The recordings for Stone Cold Metal and the Judas-Priest cover Breaking the Law took place, together with the other songs by From Afar , from April to May 2009 in the Petrax and E-Major studios in Finland. The album was produced by Tero Kinnunen (including Nightwish ) and Janne Joutsenniemi . The latter was also the producer of Victory Songs . The album was mixed by Hiili Hiilesmaa (including HIM ) in Coalhole Studios , and mastered by Svante Forsbäck in Chartmakers Studio .

Track list

All arrangements by Ensiferum, all orchestral arrangements by Mikko P. Mustönen.

# title composition length
1 Stone cold metal Toivonen / Hinkka 7:26
2 Breaking the Law ( Judas Priest Cover) Halford / Downing / Tipton 2:26

style

As on From Afar , Stone Cold Metal is compositionally no longer comparable to Ensiferum's older albums. The song has a strong progressive metal influence , but also includes epic orchestral arrangements. A unique selling point are the melodies reminiscent of the Wild West in the middle of Stone Cold Metal . This part begins with labial whistling , followed by increased use of acoustic guitar, bass, piano and banjo. The lyrics are in English and will be performed as a scream .

Breaking the Law differs from the version that was included on the digipack of the debut album Ensiferum , and has not just been remastered. The vocals are screamed up to the chorus and the song is much harder than the 2001 version.

criticism

The song Stone Cold Metal received many reviews. The author Trabi from the webzine metal-district.de compares the composition with that of Ayreon and describes the song, especially because of the unusual intermediate section, as “completely brilliant”, as does Alexander van Stein from the-pit.de . Eckart from metal.de also describes the song as "extremely successful". Maik from neckbreaker.de also describes the western part of the song as "legendary" and presents it as a new "live hit".
