One More Magic Potion is the first and only single release from Victory Songs , the third studio album by the Finnish folk / Viking metal band Ensiferum . It was released on February 7, 2007 by Spinefarm Records and was able to enter the Finnish singles chart at number one .

History of origin

Recorded were the two songs by One More Magic Potion , just like the rest of Victory Songs from November to December 2006, mostly at Sonic Pump Studios. The recording of the keyboard tracks took place on December 9, 2006 by Samuel "Päällikkö" Ruotsalainen in the Beat Domination Studios . Further vocal recordings were recorded in Crazy Crane Studios , while the mastering in Finnvox Studios was done by Mika Jussila .

According to Petri Lindroos, the idea of covering Lady in Black by Uriah Heep came about more or less spontaneously through guitarist Markus Toivonen or producer Janne Joutsenniemi.

Contents of the songs

  • One More Magic Potion (dt. Another potion ) introduces some warriors who go astray after a battle in the forest and search for a wooden house for shelter. A witch lives in the house who gives the men a magic potion with a strong hallucinogenic effect, which puts the men in a strong intoxication.
  • Lady in Black is a pacifist song by the hard rock band Uriah Heep , which is about the encounter of a man with a mysterious "Lady in Black" (woman in black). The man asks the woman for help in an unspecified, difficult fight with a terrible opponent. The woman refuses to help him and instead introduces him to peace and love. She refuses his request to stay with him and disappears just as suddenly as she appeared.

Music genre

The two songs are very different. One More Magic Potion is characterized by its consistently fast pace, and according to Stefan Popp from metal1.info , the riffing strongly reminds of Power Metal , although it sounds very folky . The singing consists entirely of screaming . Striking at Lady in Black is particularly the clock which, unlike the original, not consistently in 4 / 4 scheme, but in the chorus in 3 / 4 is kept scheme. Otherwise the song is very close to the original, so it is only sung clearly. Only towards the end does the rhythm get a bit harder with a continuous double bass .

Guest musician

Timo Väänänen

In addition to the band members, the following guest musicians also played on Victory Songs :

With Timo Väänänen, Ensiferum managed to win one of Finland's best skittle players for the single and the album. It also represents his first musical contribution to a metal song.

The song One More Magic Potion was highly praised in numerous reviews and was often highlighted as one of the highlights of Victory Songs . This is due, among other things, to the catchy melodies and the strong folk content.

Unlike the previous EP Dragonheads , which was often described as disappointing, the single was once again very well received by the press, but also by the fans. The single sold so well in Finland that it entered the Finnish single charts at number one in early March 2007 and stayed in the charts for a total of four weeks.
