Cemetary was a Swedish Gothic Metal band led by Mathias Lodmalm , which was founded in 1989, disbanded in 1997, re-established in 2000 under the name Cemetary 1213 and finally dissolved in 2005.

Band history

In 1989 singer and guitarist Mathias D. Lodmalm, guitarist Christian Saarinen, bassist Zriuko Culjak and drummer Morgan Gredåker, who was quickly followed by Juha Sievers, formed the band Cemetary. The Death Metal- based debut album An Evil Shade of Gray was released on June 26, 1992 on the Black Mark Production label . a. also signed Edge of Sanity , Lake of Tears , Morgana Lefay and Memento Mori . One year later, Godless Beauty followed , which is more towards Gothic . Here Anton Hedberg, who appeared on the previous album as a photographer for the record cover, replaced Christian Saarinen. After touring with Morgana Lefay and Invocator as well as with Benediction and Atheist , Lodmalm recruited new staff due to the falling out with his fellow musicians. He also switched studios and in 1994 Black Vanity was recorded and released. Under the strict regime of the band boss, sole songwriter and producer Lodmalm, old acquaintances carried out the ideas that should testify to further development. There should be no boredom with the listener, which is why a lot of fine-tuning was required, just as he had made it a point not to have to compromise - he had total control, true to his motto "Absolute control is the secret". While he also played the keyboards himself , he put his former classmate Thomas "Tjompe" Josefsson on bass, but put Lars Rapp at his side. There was also an alternative for Markus Nordberg on drums in the person of Christian Silver. The rhythm guitar was played by Anders Iwers, who had been with In Flames for two years in the initial phase. Other guest musicians took part, including Therion head Christofer Johnsson (who also acted as the photographer). Three songs recorded in 1995 were followed up as an EP and were at the same time forerunners for the 1996 released full album Sundown . It was intended as a deliberate demarcation from Gothic, which Lodmalm viewed as clichéd and affected . He also removed, he spoke like a mantra , from Paradise Lost -Anstrich to the repetitive comparisons to revoke the foundation. Above all, what is presented is his very own music that comes from the heart. Without being a concept album , the record has an apocalyptic red thread , expressed by the album title and the song statements, which should leave enough room for individual interpretations. He trusted the main actors of the previous album here completely: Josefsson, Nordberg and Iwers could feel like permanent members. Lodmalm sang and played guitar and piano .

1997 led to a dispute with the record company, for which Last Confessions was produced as the last contractually guaranteed album, and with the musicians to the dissolution of the band. Sundown was founded together with the former Tiamat bassist Johnny Hagel. The former Cemetary guitarist Anders Iwers took over the free seat at Tiamat. First there was a Gothic / Electro disc ( Design 19 ), then an uninspired successor that flopped ( Glimmer ). With the release of The Beast Divine via Century Media in 2000, Cemetary returned - for legal reasons as Cemetary 1213. Vesa Kenttäkumpu plays bass (and twice lead guitar) instead of the originally intended bassist Tobias Johansson, a colleague known from studio work by Christian Silver. Silver, who is basically the second drummer on Black Vanity and who had been part of the Sundown line-up from the start, was able to continue working for Lodmalm. Guitarist and singer Manne Engström, who continued to work behind the main guitarist and singer Lodmalm, had already participated in Sundowns Glimmer . Phantasma from May 2005 marked a double return , namely the one to the old name Cemetary and the one to the old label Black Mark. But then it was over again, so far for good. Lodmalm had got rid of his band members long before the Phantasma recordings were made, which was logical because he had felt like a solo artist for a long time anyway. Now he announced that he had worn himself out in the music business and turned his back on it in disappointment.

In 2011 Mathias Lodmalm supported Lake of Tears vocally on their Illwill album - in 1994 he was already involved in the production of their debut album Greater Art . In addition, he now mainly composes technoid-electronic music, including with his Domain ID project.

style

Robert Müller wrote in Metal Hammer about An Evil Shade of Gray that it was "pure and simple Death Metal", but worth listening to. On Godless Beauty , the band sounds influenced by Paradise Lost, but Cemetary would not only copy the band, the musicians "rather follow the path laid out by Paradise Lost from their own starting blocks - in this respect they have perhaps more Tiamatian mysticism than elegiac doom , but definitely a note of its own ”. The album is the only one that could come close to the masterpiece Shades of God by Paradise Lost. He said about Sundown that it was “complex and colorful” and “sensitively staged” without drifting into “tepid weepiness”. On Last Confessions , instead of “one-dimensional perfection”, an “uncomplicated lightness” reminiscent of punk prevails . Phantasma finally offers "rugged, rather melodic Gothic-Industrial-Rock, driven by dull breakbeats and a musty distorted guitar, to which Lodmalm nagging spreads his metaphysical truths". His conclusion: "idiosyncratic".

Frank Stöver wrote in Bang! it was stated that An Evil Shade of Gray to Death Metal Scandinavian style. Godless Beauty is Gothic with melancholy-melodic sections. And with Black Vanity you move in the musical spectrum between Paradise Lost and Fields of the Nephilim .

The rock-hard encyclopedia initially summarized that based on an extreme sound, Cemetary found melody and depth and then described the albums in detail: Death Metal, Gothic mixed with a 70s feeling, at Sundown finally “more melody and atmosphere ". Lodmalm was certified as a singer a further development.

Matthias Herr suspected Shade to be a death metal trend product. Regarding Beauty , he said it had the death metal dynamic, but there were also reflective moments through whispering vocals. Black Vanity emulate Gothic and Dark Wave. With Sundown you finally have your own style, but not an exciting one.

Frank Albrecht saw the trendy reflections of the individual albums before Sundown in exactly the same way, but praised the Sundown style that resulted , for example the changing between emotions. The same thing noted in Rock Hard over four years later that Cemetary continued to rely on both the Gothic and the Electro tracks, but did not choose one or the other.

According to Martin Popoff in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal. Volume 3: The Nineties , the band played on An Evil Shade of Gray technically demanding Thrash Metal , comparable to the early works of Entombed . On Godless Beauty, the band leave more room for Mathias Lodmalm's rough voice and let influences from Death Metal flow in, so that a comparison with Unleashed is obvious. In addition, influences from Gothic Metal can be heard. Songs like Now She Walks the Shadows are also a mixture of Manowar and Punk . On Black Vanity , the band almost completely turned to the Paradise Lost fans. The music fluctuates between slow passages, in which the group is comparable to Witchfinder General , Trouble and Saint Vitus , and fast Thrash Metal. The vocals also show influences from Grindcore . At Sundown the band play classic metal, with influences from death and doom metal , so a comparison with Sentenced is obvious. Songs like Elysia and Last Transmission would still let influences of Paradise Lost shine through. The band also knows how to play a mixture of symphonic elements, death metal and gothic-like new wave , so that a comparison with Edge of Sanity is obvious. On Last Confessions the band would move more towards mainstream metal. The vocals on the album are extremely versatile and there are passages of around 28 minutes that do not contain any vocals at all. On the compilation Sweetest Tragedies a mixture of Gothic Metal and Death Metal, in the style of Sentenced, can be heard.

According to Jason Ankeny of Allmusic the band to play An Evil Shade of Gray classic death metal before you to Goddess Beauty , a mix of rock turn to the 1970s and gothic rock. On Black Vanity and Sundown the band turned even further to Gothic Metal.
