Ihsahn (* 1975 in Notodden as Vegard Sverre Tveitan ) is a Norwegian composer, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and singer. He is best known as the front man of the black metal band Emperor . He played at Peccatum with his wife Heidi S. Tveitan . In April 2006 his solo debut The Adversary was released .

Life

Ihsahn alias Vegard Sverre Tveitan was born in 1975 and grew up on a large farm in Telemark . At the age of seven he took his first musical steps with the piano until he got a guitar at the age of ten and began to compose his first songs. Three years later he took part in a music seminar, where he met Tomas "Samoth" Haugen , with whom he founded the band Thou Shalt Suffer . Since Haugen soon left the project, Tveitan (then still known as Ygg) remained the only member. A little later, in the spring of 1991, Ygg, Samoth and Håvard "Mortiis" Ellefsen founded the band Emperor and recorded their first demo, Wrath of the Tyrant .

In 1995 Ihsahn worked on the Haugen Zyklon-B project , which was now called Samoth. One of the three tracks from their only EP Blood Must Be Shed was later re-released as a remix on a split 7 "with Mayhem .

After Samoth and Emperor drummer Bård “Faust” Eithun were sentenced to prison terms, Ihsahn retired to his parents' estate to compose Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk , which after Samoth's release was recorded with Trym on drums and Alver on bass and was released in 1997. In the same year Ihsahn released a CD with the demo recordings of Thou Shalt Suffer. With his wife Ihriel, Ihsahn founded the band Peccatum in 1998 , in which Ihriel's brother Lord Pz also sat on drums for some time; With this band he released the studio album Strangling from Within in 1999 .

The last Emperor album Prometheus - The Discipline of Fire & Demise (2001) was largely composed by Ihsahn himself. After the release, the band broke up. In autumn 2005, Emperor performed together for the first time in four years in Oslo and announced their reunion.

In March 2006, Ihsahn and Ihriel announced that they would temporarily end the project and devote themselves to their solo projects. In April 2006, Ihsahn released his solo debut The Adversary . In December 2007 the first album of the Hardingrock project was released , on which his wife again contributed, among other things.

Today Ihsahn lives with his wife and dog in his birthplace Notodden and teaches music at the local school.

Einar Solberg from Leprous is Ihsahn's brother-in-law and also played keyboard for Emperor.

style

Ihsahn's music varies from album to album. On the soul breaking the sound was influenced by progressive rock elements while at Arctic elements of classic rock could be found. On the Telemark EP Ihsahn returned to his roots and increasingly incorporated Black Metal elements into his music. Ihsahn often works with brass sections in his music, which he says he loves.
