Helvete , derived from "Hels vite", is the Norwegian and Swedish word for " hell ". It is often heard as a swear word. In Germanic mythology , “ Hel ” is used to denote both the underworld and its ruler. The Christian reinterpretation of the underworld as a place of punishment for the unbelievers is reflected in the second part of the word (“vite”: “repentance”) .
