Lords of Chaos (book)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lords of Chaos is a book, first published in 1998 in English, that tells the story of occult rock music , with an emphasis on black metal . The authors are Michael Moynihan from the band Blood Axis and Didrik Søderlind, then a journalist for Playboy magazine in Norway.

content

Lords of Chaos contains many conversations, among others with Hendrik Möbus from Absurd, Varg Vikernes from Burzum or Samoth , Faust and Ihsahn from Emperor . The events surrounding the church fires and murders in the early 1990s, which brought the black metal scene into the headlines, are illuminated. The book also provides information about the influence of occultism and Satanism on rock and metal music.

background

In 2002 the German edition and a CD compilation with songs by the artists mentioned in the book were published. In addition to the bands from the Norwegian and Swedish black metal scene named in the book, the compilation includes several artists from the occult and satanic environment, such as Aleister Crowley and Anton Szandor LaVey . Representatives who tend to marginalize the occult, such as Robert Johnson , were also included.

The revised American edition was published in 2003 and its German translation was published in 2005. Among other things, the interview with Möbus was changed in this; In particular, disparaging remarks about the murder victim Sandro Beyer were removed. Möbus had described the murder as a "generous act for humanity" and Beyer as a " pest of the people ", for which he was convicted of denigrating the memory of the deceased .

review

The book was very controversial when it came out, both in the German press and in scene-specific magazines. This is due, among other things, to Michael Moynihan's involvement in the right-wing and right-wing extremist scene. The sometimes clear admiration of the author for his interlocutors also did the rest to spark a controversy. Vikernes, whose person and actions are focused in the book among other things, denies the truthfulness of the descriptions over long distances.

filming

On February 8, 2019, the non-fiction-based film adaptation of Lords of Chaos, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival , was released in cinemas in the USA and Germany.
