Valhall is a Norwegian doom metal band from Oslo that was formed in 1987.

history

The band was formed in the summer of 1987 after drummer Fenriz moved. He now lived in the neighborhood of the summer house of the brothers Kenneth (electric bass) and Ronny Sorkness (vocals). Since all three had the same taste in music, they decided to found Valhall. Kenth Robin Olsen, a classmate of Kenneth Sorkness, joined the band as guitarist. In the following years the band made the first rehearsals, in which in 1988 the demo Castle of Death was created. Lars Brede Jensen then joined the band as guitarist, before two further demos appeared in January and November 1989 with Amalgamation and Trauma . Amalgamation also appeared as a split release along with the Isengard demo Specters over Gorgoroth . That same year, Fenriz left the band to focus on Darkthrone after the band had reached a record deal with Peaceville Records . However, on the demo Pagan Token , which appeared in March 1991, Fenriz was heard as a session drummer.

In the following time, the line-up of the band changed several times: In 1989 Thomas Berglie von Khold joined the band as the new drummer, before he was replaced by Erik Lancelot from Ulver in the spring . Lancelot in turn was replaced by Karl Jonny Lervåg. In addition, Olsen and Jensen also left the cast. In the spring of 1993 Fenriz got back into the band because Darkthrone had been on hiatus since the summer of 1992. In the summer rehearsals began with him, in which new songs were developed and a new guitarist was found, Geir Kolden, before Frode Malm followed. In November, the group went into the studio to material for the compilation The Reincarnation of the Sun contribute. In 1995 the debut album Moonstoned was released by Head Not Found . Fenriz had a pseudonym on the album . He also occasionally played with a Sado Maso mask to disguise his identity and focus away from himself on the band. After that, Malm left the band, after which Olsen returned to the band. Frank Wanberg also came as a keyboardist. In 1997 the second album Heading for Mars followed . Fenriz then carried the pseudonym Lee Bress. In the summer of the same year, Kolden left the line-up, whereupon Wanberg switched to the electric guitar. In 2000 the band recorded the album Red Planet , which was released on Phil Anselmo's label Housecore Records. In the meantime, from recording to release in 2009, the band had been looking for a suitable label and had taken a long break. In the same year the band played on the Last Train and the Metal Merchants Festival .

style

According to the band bio on Facebook , Valhall was influenced by bands like Saint Vitus , Candlemass , Trouble and Sleep . According to Bradley Smith of nocturnalcult.com , the band started out as a thrash and black metal band. In an interview with Smith, Ronny Sorkness stated that in the early 1990s they started to hear more doom metal bands like Saint Vitus, Trouble and Sleep, which is why the style of music from Valhall has moved there. Lothar Hausfeld from musikreviews.de described the music on Red Planet as heavy Doom Metal with influences from stoner rock and the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, parallels to Black Sabbath can often be heard. The song Rohypnol is instrumental and jazzy and Made in Iron shows influences from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal . The singing is whispered in the songs. He recommended the music to fans of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus .
