Chakal is a Brazilian thrash metal band formed in 1985 in Belo Horizonte , Minas Gerais .

history

The band was formed in early 1985 by drummer Willian Wiz, bassist Destroyer and guitarist Mark. Singer Sgôto joined a short time later. Together they played at the Metal BH II Festival , where other bands such as Sarcófago or Sepultura also played. Changes in the line-up followed. The band continued to play local concerts. Vladimir Korg, previously with the band Megathrash, joined the band as a new singer. Later guitarist Pepeu "Necromancer", previously also a member of Megathrash, joined the band. The first demo called Children Sacrifice was recorded afterwards. On the demo Max "Possessed" Cavalera (Sepultura) and Silvio SDN ( Mutilator ) could be heard as guest singers. The band also appeared on the split album Warfare Noise I ( Cogumelo Records , 1986), on which Mutilator, Sarcófago and Holocausto could also be heard. The line-up at that time was as follows: Korg (vocals), Mark (electric guitar), Destroyer (electric bass), Pepeu (electric guitar) and Willian Wiz (drums).

In August 1987 the band recorded their first album at JG Studios in Belo Horizonte. Cogumelo Records released the album Abominable Anno Domini in October of the same year. Shortly after the recordings, guitarist Pepeu left the band. In October 1988, the band went back to the studio to record the EP Living with the Pigs .

In April 1989, singer Korg left the band to join The Mist . Guitarist Mark, bassist Mercelo Laranja and drummer Wiz were the remaining members.

In 1990 the band released the album The Man Is His Own Jackal . The line-up consisted of Marcelo L. (electric bass, vocals), Willian Wizz (drums), Mark (electric guitar) and Eduardo Simões (electric guitar). In 1991 the next album followed with Death Is a Lonely Business .

The band then took a long break and meanwhile prepared material for a new album by. Singer Korg was back in the band. The group was inspired by a script written by singer Korg and by the films Night of the Living Dead , Zombie and Zombie 2 . The album Deadwalk was released in 2003. In addition, Cogumelo Records also released a special edition, which included remastered versions of the debut album Abominable Anno Domini and the EP Living with the Pigs . After the release, the Dead Man Walking Tour of Brazil followed.

In 2004 they recorded the album Demon King . The line-up was almost the same as the original line-up. A cover version of Death's Evil Dead was included on the album .

style

The band plays classic, fast thrash metal. The structure of the songs is very simple. The debut album Abominable Anno Domini was described as "grim", "pretty rough" and not very varied, the second album Man Is His Own Jackal is a little less harsh. Death Is a Lonely Business is much better produced and offers “a nice mix of memorable heavy pounders [...] and storming, faster Thrashers [...]. As a whole, this release seems noticeably more balanced and entertaining than the band's earlier production. ”With Demon King , the band returned to their original thrash metal style, without sacrificing technical advances and a style as primitive as the early one Playing publications; however, Chakal's style is easy to recognize in the singing.
