Evangelion

Evangelion is the ninth studio album by the Polish death / black metal band Behemoth . It was released on August 7, 2009 in Europe and four days later in the United States .

Title and cover

The title is an allusion to the Gospels .

“Evangelion comes from a Greek word 'Spreading the word of God' or 'spreading the good news'… oh well, you already know that we love to play with the meanings and symbolism. We're here to show you our interpretation of what Evangelion really is. "

“Evangelion comes from a Greek word that means 'to spread the word of God ' or 'to spread the good news '… well, it is well known that we love to play around with symbols and meanings. We are here to show our own interpretation of what Evangelion really is. "

- Nergal :

The cover consists of a picture of the whore Babylon , a figure from the Revelation of John .

The whore Babylon and the seven-headed beast

“The picture is of The Great Harlot of Babylon riding the seven-headed beast. Saints bow before her in worship whilst the tablets of the Ten Commandments lie broken at her feet. It represents our vision and the interpretation of the New Testament parable where the "Whore of Babylon" is a symbol of rebellion and resistance against God. "

“The picture shows the whore Babylon riding the seven-headed beast. Saints bow to her in adoration while the Ten Commandments are broken at her feet. This represents our view and interpretation of the New Testament parable , in which the 'whore of Babylon' is a symbol of rebellion and resistance to God . "

Emergence

The album was recorded on February 16, 2009 in the studio of Radio Gdańsk .

Daniel Bergstran (producer of Meshuggah , In Flames and Dark Funeral ) produced the drum tracks . Unusual techniques were used, such as recording with 22 channels to create a more "organic and natural" sound. The album was mixed by Colin Richardson .

Style and content

The Proverbs of Hell

The band uses unusual instruments and stylistic devices for the genre. For example, the song Daimonos begins with an acoustic guitar intro, while Shemhamforash uses a sitar . Lucifer is a very slow and epic piece for the band.

The title He Who Breeds Pestilence is an allusion to a passage from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell :

"He who Desires, but Acts Not, breeds Pestilence"

"He who desires, but does not act, breeds the plague"

- William Blake

reception

Evangelion received a gold record in Poland in November 2009 with 15,000 units sold .

The reception was generally very good, for example the website culturebully.com named the album of the “creepy guys” “boundless hell for the average listener ”, while metaleater.com particularly emphasized the drumming and the uniformity of the guitars and bass . Global Domination awards this “Hell in a CD” the highest number of points and compares it with the cult albums Reign in Blood and Master of Puppets . Sputnikmusic speaks of a "further development [since The Apostasy ] and a return to style". stereokiller.com, on the other hand, sees a stylistic stagnation in the album, but thinks it is good.

The song Ov Fire and the Void won the METAL HAMMER Award 2010 in the category Metal Anthem (English Metal Anthem )
