Adam Michal Darski (born June 10, 1977 in Gdynia , Poland), also known by the stage name Nergal , is the guitarist and singer of the Polish band Behemoth . He is the last remaining founding member of the band.

Life

Adam Darski was raised Christian and learned to play the guitar at the age of 8. As a stage name he chose the name of the Babylonian deity Nergal . He founded the band Behemoth with Adam Malinowski and Adam Muraszko in 1991, which initially played black metal . He was also one of the founders of The Temple of the Fullmoon , inspired by the Norwegian Inner Circle, with Blasphemous von Veles and Venom von Xantotol , Rob Darken von Graveland as a more idealistic copy of the Norwegian circle and as the “only [sic!] True satanic organization in Poland ”. In addition to the founders, the group Infernum, affiliated to Graveland, as well as the bands Mysteries, Fullmoon, Kohort, Perunwit, Dark Storm, Midnight and Pagan Temple belonged to them. Darski's break with the TTF was followed by an anti-Behemoth campaign by the TTF and threats against him and Behemoth. After the break, the organization assumed a change to right-wing extremism .

Nergal graduated from the University of Gdansk with a six-year degree in history, including one year in Latin. He is a trained museum curator .

On May 9, 2009, it was announced that Darski had a relationship with the Polish singer Dorota Rabczewska . They got engaged on January 1st, 2010. The relationship ended shortly after Darski was released from the hospital.

In 2012 Nergal was cast for the role of Joachim von Ribbentrop in Juliusz Machulski's AmbaSSada . He was also involved in advertising the Polish drink Demon and wants to donate part of the proceeds to the DKMS bone marrow center.

In 2015 Nergal released the first audio samples of an acoustic / folk project with the participation of the British musician John Porter, who lives in Poland . In March 2017, the debut album Songs of Love and Death was released under the name Me and That Man , which debuted at number 3 in the Polish album charts in early April 2017.

accusation

Adam Darski was charged with "violating religious sentiments". He tore up a Bible at a concert in Gdynia in 2007 and called the church a “murderous sect of the planet”. Then a complaint was filed against the band for “promoting Satanism ”; However, since there must be at least two complaints according to Polish law, there was only one hearing in which Darski asserted that the tearing was just a show, that it therefore fell under artistic freedom and that he had no intention of offending religious feelings. No judgment was made at the hearing. However, due to new complaints, the matter has been tried again in court since March 2010; Darski now face up to 2 years imprisonment.

On June 28, 2010 it was announced that the competent court in Gdynia had finally dismissed the lawsuit. The judges did not see Darski's behavior as a crime and could not see any "violation of religious feelings" in the stage show. On October 29, 2012, the Warsaw Supreme Court ruled that “a person violates religious sentiments even if he is aware that his or her act may hurt the feelings of others”. The court in Gdansk has to decide again.

illness

On August 25, 2010, the band announced on their website that Darski had leukemia . The disease is said to be so advanced that chemotherapy alone is no longer sufficient.

Darski therefore needed a stem cell transplant , for which a suitable donor had to be found first. His fiancée had agreed to make a donation; however, their stem cells were not matched enough to qualify for a transplant.

Darski said the following about his situation:

“People who were even worse sick than me have been healed because they thought positively. I believe in myself very much, but it has to be said that it is a bad enemy. "

- Adam Darski

After many inquiries and letters from his fans, Darski said again:

“Due to my very low personal opinion of people, I am quite shocked by the reactions to my illness. I didn't expect anything, but still got feedback that surpasses everything.

I really read every email I get, even if I can't answer all of them. The power of your words is true magic and I thank you all. You are a gigantic, indestructible army that inspires me during this difficult time.

Anyone who knows the history of Behemoth knows that we achieved everything through hard work and uncompromising attitude. That goes for my personal life too, because I'm a pretty strong asshole. I have no faith, but I am relying on 100 percent victory and I am sure that I will get out of history stronger than ever. Sun Tzu wrote in " The Art of War " that the results of a thousand battles cannot surprise you if you know yourself and your enemy. With this Nietzsche approach, I'll be the winner. Wait and see. "

- Adam Darski

On January 17, 2011 Darski was discharged from the Polish hospital Uniwersyteckie Centrum Kliniczne ( Gdańsk ) after receiving stem cells from an anonymous donor three weeks earlier.
