The Fernsteinsee is a small mountain lake on the Fernpass in the municipality of Nassereith in Tyrol . It is 934 meters above sea level. The lake is privately owned and, with its neighbors Samarangersee and Schanzlsee to the north, is a popular body of water for scuba divers . The lake is 550 meters long and up to 540 meters wide and has depths of up to 17 meters in the southeast and northeast. The total area of the lake is 182,222 m². 140,824 m² of this is accounted for by the water surface and 41,398 m² by the island.
Fernstein Castle, which has been converted into a hotel, is located on the western shore of the lake on Fernpassstrasse (B 179). In Fernsteinsee, on an island formed by a Toma hill , there are the ruins of the Sigmundsburg hunting lodge , construction of which began around 1451.
The owner of the lake requires divers to have at least 80 dives documented in the logbook and to stay at the Hotel Fernstein for at least two nights .
