Helheim (not to be confused with the NSBM / Industrial Metal band of the same name ) is a Norwegian band that is one of the founders of the Norwegian Viking Metal movement.

history

The band was founded in 1992 by V'gandr and H'grimnir in Bergen . A short time later, Hrymr joined as a drummer, and Helheim played at some festivals in Bergen to gain live experience. Nidhogg joined the band in mid-1993, and the Helheim demo was released in autumn 1993 . Because the band found the material too bad, the demo was never spread beyond the borders of Norway. They began to write new material and in the meantime Nidhogg left the band again. In 1994 Nidr ok Nordr liggr Helvegr was released, which made the German label Solistitium Records (now Millenium Records) aware of Helheim and signed two albums. The band made their debut Jormundgand in 1995 at the Grieghallen studio in Norway. The first European tour followed in 1996, after which the band began work on their second album Av Norrøn Ætt . This was taken up again in the Grieghallen.

After the record company Massacre Records had lost interest in Helheim, they first looked for a new one, because V'gandr " didn't want to mix the bands [Helheim and Aeternus ] and the label [Dark Essence Records] "; but since the other employees of Dark Essence Records and members of both bands had a strong interest in a contract, he finally agreed, but refused to participate in the contract negotiations, as he "did not want to be on both sides of the fence". The Journeys and the Experiences of Death was released in 2006 via Dark Essence Records , which was not recorded in the Grieghallen studio, but in the Conclave.

style

Initially, Helheim oriented itself towards Norwegian Black Metal , using mainly blast beats and high-pitched screeching vocals , but also non-genre elements such as jaw harp , trumpet and female vocals. The production also corresponded to the typical sound of the Grieghallen studio, where Mayhem , Darkthrone and Burzum also recorded albums. On later albums the music became more sluggish and complex. The comparison with Enslaved was repeatedly drawn.
