The founders Ralf Gyllenhammar, Hannes Hansson, Mats Hansson and Mats Johansson were already active in a punk band called Grindstone in the early 1990s . As their style changed more and more over time, the band was disbanded in 1995 and the four members devoted themselves to other projects for the first time.

In 1998 the four former bandmates met again on the island of Orust at Hannes and Mats Hansson's farm, where the first demo recordings were made for Mustasch, which soon appeared on some compilations. Mustasch came into contact with Fredrik Wennerlund, a manager of the major label EMI Group , through the befriended psychedelic rock band The Soundtrack of Our Lives . Wennerlund's attention was drawn to the Mustasch T-shirts worn by The Soundtrack of Our Lives members. In 2000, through this contact, they got a record deal with Majesty, a sub-label of EMI, and shortly thereafter played in a commercial for the Toyota Avensis .

In February 2001, The True Sound of the New West was their first EP , which earned them the reputation of being a mixture of Black Sabbath and The Cult . Together with producer Roberto Laghi ( Hardcore Superstar ), who had already supported her on her EP, work began on her debut album Above All , which was released in March 2002 and which made it to number 22 in the Swedish album charts. This was followed by a tour through Norway, Finland and Denmark and another through Germany with Gluecifer and Rose Tattoo . In her home country Mustasch was nominated for the Grammis , the Swedish equivalent of the Grammy Award , in the category “ Best Hard Rock ”.

For the next album they worked with the producer Jacob Hellner ( Rammstein , Apocalyptica ). Ratsafari was released in September 2003 and, in addition to chart successes , earned them another Grammis nomination. Further tours through Europe followed, through Germany as support for Motörhead .

The next album, which by their own account should go back towards their roots, was recorded again with Roberto Laghi. In June 2005 Powerhouse was released as the last album on Majesty. After the record deal with the major label was fulfilled, Mustasch self-published the EP Parasite , which entered the Swedish charts at number 22. Shortly thereafter, the band signed in September 2006 with the metal label Regain Records , where Latest Version of the Truth was released on May 18, 2007 . With number three, the album achieved the band's highest position in the Swedish album charts, and the recently released single Double Nature even climbed to number two. The nomination for the Grammis also led to success. At the gala on January 9, 2008, Mustasch received the award for “Best Hard Rock”, presented by Mikkey Dee .

In March 2008, Mustasch published the best-of compilation Lowlife Highlights with 18 songs from the albums released by EMI. The band played at Wacken Open Air in August .

Founding member and lead guitarist Hannes Hansson left the band in summer 2008 and was replaced by David Johannesson in October 2008. With their new guitarist, they toured first as headliners and immediately afterwards together with the band Die Apokalyptischen Reiter across Europe.

In 2009, drummer Mats "Dojan" Hansson had to be replaced by Danne McKenzie, who had already replaced him several times, after numerous injuries (muscle tears). In December 2011, the band also announced the split from McKenzie. It was not until five months later - in May 2012 - that the band announced that Jejo Perković, who has stood in for several concerts since separating from McKenzie, would from now on be a permanent member of the band. Perković had previously played with the Swedish hip-hop group "Infinite Mass" and with the doom metal band Candlemass , also from Sweden . On August 6, 2015, Mustasch announced on their homepage that Perković would be leaving the band with immediate effect to look for new challenges. Bassist Stam Johansson justified this step in an interview with the upcoming comeback of Infinite Mass. Robban Bäck (previously with Ammunition, Eclipse and Sabaton ) was signed as a replacement for Perković for the upcoming tour through Germany, Finland and Sweden . After the tour was over, Bäck was confirmed as a permanent member by the band on December 22nd, 2015.
