Edward Francis (medic)

Edward Francis (born March 27, 1872 in Shandon , Ohio , † April 14, 1957 in Washington, DC ) was an American medic .

Life

Francis studied medicine at Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated in 1897. From 1900 he was a bacteriologist and hygienist at the US Department of Public Health, which he headed from 1920 to 1938. His research mainly focused on infectious diseases.

Francis described in 1921 the pathogen named after him of the infectious disease tularemia ( Francisella tularensis ) , which he examined and described in detail. He also got the disease himself.
