Need is a Greek progressive metal band from Athens , founded in 2004.

history

The band was founded in 2004 around the guitarist George "Ravaya" Tzavaras before a first demo was released under the name Avoidinme . After the line-up had changed several times, this solidified in early 2006. A short time later, the group signed a record deal with Burning Star Records , which in November 2006 released their debut album The Wisdom Machine worldwide . This was followed by appearances all over Greece and a small European tour with her label colleagues Zenith . There were also performances with Candlemass , Jon Oliva's Pain , Threshold and Deadsoul Tribe , among others . In 2008, the band spent most of the time writing and recording their second album, Siamese God , which was recorded and mixed at Soundflakes Studio in Athens and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music Studio in New York City . The sound carrier was released in December 2009 in collaboration with Rock Hard and Venerate Industries . In autumn 2010 a three-week tour through Europe was undertaken with Jon Oliva's Pain and Dreamtone & Iris Mavraki's Neverland . In summer 2011 the group was seen at the Sonisphere Festival . In September Siamese God was re-released on SAOL Music in Europe, before an appearance with Symphony X followed in October . In January 2014 the next album Orvam - A Song for Home was released. Victor Kouloubis can then be heard as the new bass player and Stelios Paschalis as the new drummer. Neil Kernon had been the producer while it was being remastered by Alan Douches in New York City. It was released in Europe on Trailblazer Records and in the USA on Laser's Edge . In September the band could be seen at ProgPower USA . While Need was still performing concert engagements in Greece in 2015, she was already working on her next album. In September the live DVD Orvam: A Song for Atlanta (Live at ProgPower USA 2014) was released, which contains the entire festival appearance. In the first half of 2015, the band finished their work on the album, which was released in January 2017 under the name Hegaiamas: A Song for Freedom . The release was followed by a 24-gig tour with Evergrey through the United States and Canada . Due to the success, the two groups extended their tour to a European tour with 25 concerts in September and October 2017. In 2018 the band took part in ProgPower Europe .

style

Florian Schörg from Metal.de wrote about Siamese God that the album cover arouses associations with " Buddhism , Hinduism and other incarnations of Far Eastern philosophy ", but actually offers western rock music . The songs would be very different from one another: sometimes you play alternative rock with a metalcore influence , then you use industrial and thrash metal riffs in another song and another time you play a radio-friendly ballad. The strengths are "crisp and convincingly arranged songs" as well as a sound that seems "nicely tidy and in spite of an immense amount of detail by no means overloaded". One point of criticism is "the vocals, which seem badly weak in places, which, however, enhance the quieter passages with a lot of feeling" and the riffs also have no recognition value in the long run. Steven Reid of seaoftranquility.org found that the band used a variety of progressive styles on Orvam - A Song for Home , reminiscent of Fates Warning , Nevermore and Tool . Occasionally the group sounds like Metallica or early Marillion . The band avoids too much of a display of technical skills as is often the case in Progressive Metal. Dario Albrecht from betreutesproggen.de described Hegaiamas: A Song for Freedom as Progressive Metal, which places special emphasis on atmosphere and melodies. There are sonic parallels to Dream Theater and especially Nevermore. Above all, Need has the vocals in common with the last band, the timbre is very reminiscent of Warrel Dane's . However, through the use of folk sounds, the group as a whole achieves its own style.
