Karnivool is a five-piece Australian alternative rock / progressive metal music group from Perth , Western Australia , founded in 1997.

history

Karnivool grew out of a high school band formed in Perth in 1997 . In the beginning, the band played cover versions of bands as diverse as Nirvana and Carcass and a few of their own songs, mainly at parties in Perth and the surrounding area. In 1998 singer Ian Kenny decided to focus on his own songs and got rid of his bandmates. With guitarists Drew Goddard and Mark Hosking, bassist Jon Stockman, and drummer Ray Hawking, he found suitable band members with whom he recorded a first, self-titled EP . In 2001 the second EP Persona was created . On the debut album Themata , guitarist Drew Goddard also took over the drums and got involved in the songwriting . With Steve Judd a permanent drummer was finally found.

In 2009 the album Sound Awake was released . It took second place on the ARIA album charts on June 15, 2009.

In 2013 the album Asymmetry followed , which reached number 1 in the charts in Australia and also made it into the charts in Germany and Switzerland.

Music genre

The band started out as a nu-metal band. After Andrew Goddard got more involved in the songwriting, the music tended more towards the progressive metal direction. The music is based on a combination of tuning the low three guitar strings down to " Dropped B " as is common in Nu-Metal, while the high three strings are tuned to the E standard.

Awards

At the WAMi Awards 2007, Karnivool won five WAMingtons for "Most Popular Act", "Most Popular Live Act", "Best Male Vocalist" (Ian Kenny), "Best Guitarist" (Andrew Goddard) and "Best Hard Rock Act".
