The Cat Empire is a six-piece musical group from Melbourne , Australia . Her songs are influenced by influences from jazz , ska , reggae , funk , Latin to hip-hop , klezmer and rock .

With three successful albums, several EPs and live recordings as well as performances around the world, they are one of the most successful bands in Australia. The band name and logo come from Max Riebl, the younger brother of lead singer Felix Riebl.

history

In 1999 Oliver McGill, Felix Riebl and Ryan Monro began with smaller appearances in Melbourne. In the beginning only with keyboard, double bass, percussion and vocals, Harry James Angus on trumpet, Will Hull-Brown on drums and Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwala as DJ joined them in 2001.

In 2001 they performed at the Melbourne Festival and at the end of the year they released the single "Feline" and the "Live at Adelphia" EP. After playing a few gigs at the Adelaide Festival of Arts in early 2002, they headlined the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the St Kilda Film Festival in March.

This was followed by sold-out performances in San Francisco and at the Edinburgh Festival , where they played 16 appearances on the Late 'n' Live show from 3am to 5am.

In 2004 they played for the first time in Germany and gave a concert in Karlsruhe as part of the Zeltival im Tollhaus . As part of their 2006 world tour, they gave further concerts in Germany, for example in the sold-out Berlin Kalkscheune or free of charge at the Nuremberg Bardentreffen .

The Cat Empire was also seen live in Germany and Austria in 2007. In the same year, the band also performed at the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals .

In 2009 the “Live on Earth” World Tour followed, which made guest appearances in Germany and Austria.

The new album Cinema was released in Germany on July 6, 2010 . In autumn 2010 The Cat Empire could be seen live in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne.

In November 2012, The Cat Empire performed in Munich , Berlin , Hamburg , Strasbourg and Vienna .

On May 17, 2013, her next studio album, Steal the Light, was released with 12 songs. Her latest album, Rising With The Sun , was released worldwide on March 4th, 2016 and accompanied by a comprehensive tour that will last until the end of 2016 (as of July 2016).

Regular members

  • Felix Riebl (lead singer, percussion) was born on May 1st, 1981, his father is Austrian and his mother is Australian. He has a younger brother named Max who created the band name The Cat Empire and the band logo.
  • Ollie McGill (keyboard, piano, melodica, saxophone, backing vocals, recorder) was also born in 1981. He has already played in eight bands and has mastered several musical instruments.
  • Ryan Monro (double bass, electric bass, backing vocals) was born on July 26, 1981. He co-founded The Cat Empire with Felix and Ollie.
  • Harry James Angus (lead singer, trumpet, guitar) was born on June 11, 1982. He is the second lead singer and trumpeter for The Cat Empire. He joined the band in 2001 along with Will and Jumps.
  • Will Hull Brown (drums) was born on August 11, 1982. He brought the rock influence into the sound of the cats.
  • Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwala (DJ) was the last to join the Cats. He introduced the other band members to the world of hip hop.
