As I Lay Dying (often abbreviated AILD ) is an American metalcore - band , which was founded in 2000 by ex-Society's-Finest guitarist Tim Lambesis and drummer Jordan Mancino. The name of the band comes from the English original title of the novel When I was dying by William Faulkner .

history

Genesis and Encasing of Ashes (2000-2003)

As I Lay Dying was founded in San Diego , California in 2000 . In 2001 a first line-up came about and shortly afterwards the group released the album Beneath the Encasing of Ashes on Pluto Records in June 2001 . In 2002 they recorded more songs for a split CD with American Tragedy .

Frail Words Collapse and Shadows Are Security (2003-2006)

In early 2003 they received an offer for a record deal with Metal Blade Records due to their increasing popularity . In July 2003 the group released the second album - Frail Words Collapse . Tours with Himsa , Shadows Fall , The Black Dahlia Murder followed. In June 2005, As I Lay Dying released their third album called Shadows Are Security .

On May 19, 2006, the CD A Long March: The First Recordings was released, combining recordings made by the band from their early stages with a new recording of their first EP. In November 2006, As I Lay Dying embarked on a European tour as the opening act for Bullet for My Valentine , which met with displeasure among some fans, as the latter group was viewed as too commercially oriented.

An Ocean Between Us and This Is Who We Are (2007-2010)

In winter 2006 bassist and singer Clint Norris left the band because he had married and wanted to concentrate on his private life. Norris was replaced by Josh Gillbert shortly afterwards.

On August 24, 2007, the fourth studio album An Ocean Between Us was released , which made it to number 24 in the German album charts. The song Nothing Left was nominated in the USA for a Grammy in the category "Best Metal Performance", which Slayer won with the song Final Six .

The first live DVD This Is Who We Are was released on April 9, 2009 in the US and on April 14, 2009 in Europe.

The Powerless Rise and Decas (2010-2012)

When As I Lay Dying finished their tour with Lamb of God , they were working on their fifth studio album. It is called The Powerless Rise and was released in the US on May 11, 2010, and in Europe on May 7th.

On November 7, 2011, the album Decas was released in Europe. This contains three new songs, four cover versions, a revised old track and four remix tracks.

Awakened and Arrest of Lambesis (2011-2013)

As I Lay Dying toured Europe in autumn 2012 with Trivium , Caliban and Upon a Burning Body , including in seven German cities. Her new album Awakened was released in Germany on September 21st. On September 11th, the video clip for A Greater Foundation was released.

On May 7, 2013, lead singer Tim Lambesis was arrested by San Diego police. He is said to have set a contract killer on his wife, who turned out to be an undercover agent. A joint tour with Killswitch Engage and a summer tour in 2013 were then canceled. Lambesis was released from custody on May 31, 2013 for a bail payment of $ 160,000 after hiring a bail agent because he was unable to pay the actual bail amount of $ 2 million.

Unrestricted hiatus, founding Wovenwar and Lambesis' return (2013 to date)

On February 26, 2014, Tim Lambesis pleaded guilty and had to answer for incitement to murder. In May 2014, he was sentenced to six years in prison. In an interview with Alternative Press in May 2014, he confessed to being an atheist and calling himself a Christian only to boost sales. The rest of the band stated that the band was on pause. The remaining musicians have teamed up with the singer Shane Blay from Oh, Sleeper and formed the band Wovenwar .

After Lambesis was paroled in December 2016, he returned to the band. In June 2018 they released the new song My Own Grave and announced that they would play their first live concert after Lambesis' return on June 16 in San Diego.

In August 2019 the band announced the new album Shaped by Fire for September 20th, as well as the switch to the record label Nuclear Blast . On March 27, 2020 the band released the song Destruction or Strength.

style

The band is usually counted to the genre of metalcore . Bands like Killswitch Engage or Caliban can also be found here. The influences range from Death Metal to Hardcore to Thrash Metal . Tim Lambesis generally takes on the guttural and Josh Gilbert the clear-voiced vocals. The founder and singer Tim Lambesis described the band on the official band homepage as a Christian band. He later revised this statement in court and called only one member of the band as a believer. He also admitted that As I Lay Dying was supposed to promote record sales because of their image as a Christian band.
