Himsa was an American metalcore band from Seattle , Washington .

history

1998-2007

Founded in 1998, Himsa released the EP Himsa in August and the debut album Ground Breaking Ceremony in November via Revelation Records.

After the band recorded the EP Death Is Infinite in November 2001 , they were signed by Prosthetic Records .

In June 2003 the second studio album Courting Tragedy and Disaster was released , which was followed by a long tour through the USA and Europe.

The third studio album Hail Horror , which was recorded in Denmark in 2005, was released in February 2006 with a year delay. Tours with bands like Darkest Hour and The Acacia Strain followed . After Himsa toured Australia with Parkway Drive in November 2006 , they signed a recording deal with Century Media Records in December 2006 .

In April 2007 the recordings for the fourth studio album Summon in Thunder began . It was released just five months later via Century Media.

Dissolution (2008)

On August 16, 2008, Himsa announced the breakup of the band. Bassist Derek Harn said: “After more than 10 years, four studio albums and countless tours, the last three years have been pretty crisis-proof. After sacrificing everything to ensure the band's survival, now it's time to let it go. We made a great, and reportedly our best, CD (Summon in Thunder), we have a great label, we are doing, we are touring, and we are fine. All is well. And we leave it at that. (...) If we can't tour the way we have in the last few years, then it is not Himsa. It would be better for us to hang up than for us to disappear from memory. "

Music genre

On the EP Himsa , the band's music was still significantly influenced by hardcore punk . On the first studio album, Ground Breaking Ceremony , the style of music went more towards metalcore and in 2003, influences from melodic death metal were added on the second album, Courting Tragedy and Disaster . These two styles had existed in the music of Himsa until their dissolution.

Band name

The band name Himsa is derived from the term Ahimsa , which literally means not to hurt . The letter A of Ahimsa gives the term the opposite meaning of Himsa , thus Himsa means violence or harm .
