Erna Horn (* 1904 ; † 1982 ; married Horn-Arndt ), who also published under the name Maria Anders , was one of the best-known German cookbook authors in the 1950s and 1960s.

Life

Established as a cookbook author since the 1930s, she and her husband Dr. Julius Arndt (1898–1978) Buchenau Castle and set up an experimental kitchen there. Her publishing house was also based in Buchenau. The experimental kitchen and publishing house remained there until the 1970s.

As a female role model from the 1930s to the 1950s, Erna Horn stood for a seamless continuation of the pre-war, housewife and caring role model. Her practical cookbook "Koche mit mir", which appeared in 1950, was sponsored by the Rosenthal porcelain factory. An informative source on the social history of the 1950s is her book Hohe Schule der Lebensart , an "Knigge" that not only reflects the manners , but also the image of society of the Adenauer era .

Together with Julius Arndt, Erna Horn had been building up a continuously and systematically expanded collection of cookbooks since the 1930s, which at her death comprised around 2,700 volumes. The cookbook collection was also initially at Schloss Buchenau. After her death, the collector and travel entrepreneur Georg Höltl took over the collection and expanded it to around 12,400 volumes. Today around 500 of the historical volumes of the collection are in the Wilder Mann Glass Museum in Passau, the rest in the Rotel Tours archive in Tittling.

In 1963 a new edition of Henriette Davidis ' practical cookbook was published in Lengerich , which Erna Horn had compiled.

Erna Horn is considered to be the first female spokesperson for Bavarian radio. From 1928 on, she gave numerous radio lectures on household issues, which later resulted in her book "The Modern Household".
