Norther was a melodic death metal band from Finland .

Band history

Norther was founded in Finland in 1996 under the name Requiem and initially consisted of guitarist Petri Lindroos and drummer Toni Hallio, who were accompanied by two other musicians. After the band split up and the rehearsal room was lost, they played as a trio at home, in basements, in youth centers and in the attic of Toni Hallios' grandmother.

Towards the end of 1997 a friend of the band, Alexander Kuoppala (ex- Children of Bodom ), organized a new rehearsal room in Lepakko , whereupon the band started an extensive search for new band members, but initially without much success. However, when this rehearsal room was destroyed, the third man on the side of Hallio and Lindroos lost motivation and left the band. After this shock, they soon organized a new rehearsal room in Nosturi and looked again for members to complete the line-up of the band, which would then be called Norther.

It wasn't until the beginning of 2000 that Kristian Ranta was discovered as a new guitarist. The brothers Sebastian and Joakim Ekroos, friends of Ranta, also joined the band. Finally, a demo recording was made and the band officially renamed Norther, whereupon they signed a record deal with Spinefarm Records . Nevertheless, some inconsistencies with the Ekroos brothers led to their exit from the band, so that the line-up was reduced to a trio again. Soon afterwards, however, Jukka Koskinen and Tuomas Planman found Norther, which resulted in a stable cast.

In 2001 Norther recorded their first album Dreams of Endless War , which was released in mid-2002. Since it was pretty well received by the scene, Norther began to play concerts around Helsinki . A little later, the album Mirror of Madness was recorded with producer Anssi Kippo in the Astia Studio , which was released in early 2003.

Since 2004 Petri Lindroos has also been the front man at Ensiferum , where he replaces Jari Mänenpää after he left for his own project Wintersun .

In the same year, the album Death Unlimited was released on March 15 . The style is very similar to the previous album Dreams of Endless War , but the music was recorded more aggressively and the vocals were partly distorted.

After numerous appearances, the EP Solution7 was released a year later , which contains previously unpublished material. What was new about this recording was that guitarist Kristian Ranta also contributed vocal lines.

In the summer of 2005 in Studio Fredman in Sweden's Gothenburg fourth album Till Death Unites Us included. After the recordings, drummer Toni Hallio left the band and was replaced by Heikki Saari. The release of Till Death Unites Us in January 2006. The album received positive reviews and secured Norther the first top ten entry into the Finnish charts .

Later that year the band composed the title track Frozen Angel for the Finnish film V2 - Dead Angel .

In February 2007 the EP No Way Back was released , which was initially only available in Finland, later also in Japan. No Way Back went straight to number one on the Finnish charts. Several festival appearances followed, including at the Wacken Open Air .

After the recordings for the fifth album in the Astia Studios , a month-long European tour with Amoral and Drone started .

Norther was then able to negotiate a new contract with the record company Century Media Records , which released the album N on February 13, 2008 . A contract was negotiated with Marquee Avalon for the publication in Japan .

On March 4, 2009 Norther announced that they had split up with founding member Petri Lindroos, because Lindroos' work at Ensiferum limited Norther's function as an active band.

Since April 14th, 2009 Aleksi Sihvonen has replaced Lindroos as lead singer. Sihvonen was singer and guitarist with Imperanon , which broke up in 2007. In addition, Daniel Freyberg, an old friend of the band and singer of Naildown , has been recruited to play the role of live guitarist, who has been a full member since February 24, 2010.

On July 24, 2012, the band officially announced their breakup. The farewell concert took place on August 10, 2012 at the Brutal Assault Festival 2012.
