Texas Norther

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Texas Norther or Blue Norther , also Norther for short , describes a weather phenomenon in the form of a cold wave that occurs in the Midwest and on the Great Plains of the USA in meteorology . The name of this phenomenon refers on the one hand to the wind direction from the north , on the other hand to the state of Texas and the clear dark blue sky that goes along with a blue norther .

Since the North American mainland lacks significant weather divisions in the form of mountain ranges in an east-west direction, cold polar air can reach the Gulf coast from Hudson Bay at all times of the year and cause drastic drops in temperature. In a norther , temperatures drop by up to 25 ° F (~ 14 ° C ) per hour. The weather situation known as norther can last for up to three days.
