Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood is the third studio album by the Danish Metal - band Volbeat . It was released on August 28, 2008 via Mascot Records. The album reached number one on the Danish and Finnish album charts. Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood was awarded triple platinum in Denmark and a gold record in Finland , Sweden and Germany .
Emergence
After the release of the previous album Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil , Volbeat played around 100 concerts within nine months. During this tour, the band collected ideas for new songs while traveling between the performance locations, on the bus or during the sound check. Sometimes singer and main composer Michael Poulsen recorded the ideas with his mobile phone . Apart from the cover versions, Poulsen says he wrote 99 percent of the music, while the other band members contributed small parts. For example, Thomas Bredahl wrote the reggae-like intro of “Still Counting”.
The recordings took place from March 31 to April 23, 2008 in the Hansen Studios in Ribe ( Denmark ). Like the first two albums was Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood of Jacob Hansen produced . 28 songs were written for the album, 14 of which were recorded. These include cover versions of Hank Williams (“ I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry ”) and Kitty Wells (“Making Believe”). However, the band got their inspiration for the latter song from the cover version of Social Distortion .
Guest vocalists include producer Jacob Hansen and the Danish singer Pernille Rosendahl at " Mary Ann's Place ", who celebrated some successes in Denmark with her former band Swan Lee . The song "Mary Ann's Place" was played several times at concerts before the recording began, but Poulsen was of the opinion that a female voice would do the song good. After Poulsen's girlfriend played him a Swan Lee CD, Poulsen contacted Rosendahl and received an acceptance. Originally, Poulsen wanted a female soul voice to sing the chorus for the song "Light a Way" . Since he couldn't find a suitable singer, he rewrote the text and sang the chorus himself.

The main theme of the album is the story of a man who is found in a Cadillac in the middle of the desert . He was killed by seven shots. When the police arrive, however, the man and the car are gone. The murdered man drives to a town called 10 House City, Mississippi , where he and a few other people start a band called "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood". The band goes on tour in the USA to find the killer. This story is covered in seven songs on the album. The protagonist of the story is shown on the album cover .
The story told does not end on this album, however. According to Michael Poulsen, the listener will only find out who the man is and why he was murdered on the next album. In another interview, Poulsen admitted that he himself does not yet know the reason for the murder. The album title came about after Poulsen heard a song by the band Social Distortion.
“ Mike Ness sang something like 'I'm a guitar gangster without a tune' or something like that. I thought about the words 'Guitar Gangster' and suddenly images and ideas were buzzing through my head. "
"Back to Prom" is about a resident of 10 House City who looks back on his only great love , which he experienced in the 1950s. "Maybellene i Hofteholder" is about a stalker who is obsessed with the striptease dancer Maybellene. "A Broken Man and the Dawn" is about a man who returns home after a war . His girlfriend, whom he wanted to marry before the outbreak of war, has since died of cancer . "Wild Rover of Hell" is kind of a tribute to the band Metallica , who are a huge influence on Volbeat. The protagonist of the song drives his car on a highway and listens to the Metallica album Ride the Lightning . “We”, on the other hand, was inspired by country music , especially by Johnny Cash .
In the song "Still Counting," a 10 House City resident and a member of the band sit at the bar and talk. The basic message is that it is very easy for a person to make judgments about others and to call them liars or idiots. "Light a Way" tells the story of a little boy who was forcibly separated from his mother. He makes a living at 10 House City as a shoe shine and hopes to see his mother again one day. In “Find that Soul”, the band's singer sings a song for the guests in the bar before he leaves town.
The song "Mary Ann's Place" continues the story of the songs "Danny & Lucy", the "Fire Song" (both from the album The Strength / The Sound / The Songs ) and "Mr & Mrs Ness" (from the album Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil ). Mary Ann is the name of Lucy's mother, who committed suicide in the song "Mr & Mrs Ness" . Her husband, despite being innocent, was sentenced to prison . While on leave, he visits the graves of his wife and daughter, which are next to each other. It is the first Volbeat song in which a guest singer can be heard.
publication
In addition to the regular CD version with 13 songs, a Danish digipak version was released, which also contains live recordings of the songs Rebel Monster and Soulweeper 2 . On June 5, 2009, a limited "Tour Edition" of the album was released. In addition to another cover artwork, it contains the music videos for the songs We , Maybellene I hofteholder and Sad Man's Tongue .
The song "Maybellene i Hofteholder" was released as the first single . The single, which only contains the title song, reached number five on the Danish singles chart and became the band's first top 10 hit. The second single "Mary Ann's Place" reached number 35 in the Danish charts. The song "Still Counting" was used as the B-side .
