The 26th echo award ceremony of the German Phono Academy took place on April 6, 2017 at Messe Berlin . The gala was moderated by Xavier Naidoo and Sasha and broadcast with a time delay on April 7, 2017 on the TV channel VOX . The echo was awarded in 22 categories. At the end of 2016, the ARD announced that it would no longer broadcast the echo award. The transmitter VOX then stepped in and presented a new concept together with the Federal Association of the Music Industry. After that, the categories were reduced from 31 to 22 and each national category was given its own specialist jury made up of around 700 representatives from the Federal Association of the Music Industry and former national Echo winners. Your judgment makes 50 percent, the remaining 50 percent result from music sales and chart placements. The winners of the evening with two awards each were Udo Lindenberg , AnnenMayKantereit , Rag 'n' Bone Man and Beginner . Marius Müller-Westernhagen was honored for his life's work. With Wizkid , a Nigerian was awarded an ECHO for the first time , and after Howard Carpendale (South Africa) he is only the second African to receive an ECHO Pop .

Overall, the television recording on VOX was followed by 1.28 million viewers.

criticism

In the run-up to the echo award, there was criticism of both the award criteria and the price itself. Editors of the magazines Visions , Musikexpress and Der Spiegel declined to take part in the expert jury because there are sometimes artists who can vote for themselves. The television presenter and satirist Jan Böhmermann criticized the fact that "too often soulless commercial shit" is honored at the Echo and dedicated the issue of the program Neo Magazin Royale on April 6, 2017 to this topic.
