Location of Den Hoorn in the municipality of Texel |
Den Hoorn (also called De Hoore ) is a small village on the island of Texel in the Netherlands . Apart from the ferry port 't Horntje , it is the southernmost village on the island and lies on the edge of an extensive dune area. The youth hostel De Stolp is just outside the village.
history
Originally located on the site of today's Den Hoorn ( De Oude Hoorn ), it was burned down in 1398 in the hook and cod war . Today's Den Hoorn was initially located directly on the sea, but in the course of land reclamation it increasingly migrated inland. The inhabitants initially made a living from agriculture, fishing and animal husbandry. From the 17th century, international merchant shipping became an important industry. Many Den Hoorn residents were active as pilots during this period. After the construction of the North Holland Canal (completion in 1824) and the North Sea Canal (completion in 1875), this industry increasingly lost its importance. Many residents found employment in the newly emerging flower cultivation.
Attractions
In Den Hoorn there are 21 cultural monuments designated as Rijksmonument. Probably the best known is the town's church with its striking white tower, which was built between 1425 and 1450.
