Radboud Castle ( Dutch Kasteel Radboud ) stands on the eastern side of the harbor in Medemblik, the Netherlands .

history

Floris V of Holland subjugated West Friesland after a successful war . Then he had a castle built in Medemblik, among other places, as part of a chain of castles against the West Frisians to secure his sovereign territory . Radboud Castle was commissioned in 1282. The exact date of construction is not known. The original blueprint of the castle corresponded to the Muiderslot castle . It is believed that the castle was named after the Frisian king Radbod . However, there is no evidence of this.

In later years the fortress was besieged several times and in the meantime also served as a prison. During the Eighty Years' War the castle was besieged in 1572 and 1588. From the 17th century the castle fell into disrepair. Parts of the castle were later demolished. In 1889 the castle was transferred to the state. He had the complex renovated and thus saved the castle from complete ruin. From 1897 to 1934 the Medemblik district court was housed in a castle hall.

After restorations between 1964 and 1965, a museum was set up in the castle. From the original castle there are still two residential wings that can be visited. There is also an exhibition on the life of the West Frisians in the Middle Ages and the history of the city and its castle.
