Barthout van Assendelft

Barthout van Assendelft (* born around 1440, location unknown; † after 1502 in The Hague (?)) Was a Dutch nobleman and the first state advocate ( councilor ) of the then county of Holland .

Van Assendelft, named after the Ambachtsherrschaft Assendelft who owned his family , was possibly a close relative of Barthout van Assendelft Willemsz, Lord of Vlieland and Veenhuizen . He fulfilled various offices such as that of a court master at the court of the Burgundian Duke Philip the Good and that of a Schepen (lay judge) of Haarlem . Barthout van Assendelft studied at the University of Leuven (1453) and between 1455 and 1456 at the University of Paris . In 1462 received his doctorate he attended the University of Ferrara for Doctor of Law .

After his return to Holland in 1468 he was entrusted with the office of stadsadvocaat ( city ​​judge ) of Leiden . He held this office until 1477, only to be employed in 1480 as the first advocate of Holland on the initiative of the Dutch knighthood in the states of Holland and West Friesland . The municipal office of pensioner , which was common in the early Netherlands, served as a model . Until the uprising of the United Provinces in 1572, this office did not have the same status as in the Golden Century .

Assendelft's first term of office lasted until 1489, his second he fulfilled between the years 1494 and 1497. In 1489 he was also active as Procuereur-generaal at the Hof van Holland, Zealand and West-Friesland ; but he was dismissed from this office in the same year because of grievances.
